Lovely Dochula Pass, Bhutan

Dochula Pass is a clean and peaceful mountain pass located between Thimphu and Punakha. The word "La" means "Pass" and is often used to refer to a cold mountain pass.

Every day, travelers and tourists visit Dochula to enjoy the fresh air, peaceful surroundings, and the stunning views of the Himalayan landscape. The pass is well-maintained, which provides us a refreshing place to relax and connect with nature.

At Dochula, there are 108 stupas known as Druk Wangyal Chortens. Visitors can circumambulate around the stupas in a clockwise direction, which is considered auspicious in Buddhist tradition. While circumambulating, it is perfectly fine to wear casual clothes such as pants and shirts. There is no need to wear the national dress. However, if you wish to enter the nearby Druk Wangyal lhakhang (temple), Bhutanese people have to wear the national dress—Gho for men and Kira for women. Tourists, however, are not required to follow this dress code.

Dochula is more than just a scenic spot. It is also a spiritual place where visitors can chant mantras with a pure heart. Dedicated Buddhists often chant the Avalokiteshvara Mantra—"OM MANEY PEMAY HUNG REH"—while walking around the stupas. This practice is done not only to show devotion to the Triple Gem but also for the well-being of all sentient beings.

Visiting Dochula can be both a beautiful and meaningful experience, which offers us peace of mind, spiritual connection, and a deeper appreciation of Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage.
